WN8 is a community rating, not an official Wargaming score. It compares a player's results in each vehicle with expected results for that same vehicle, then combines those comparisons into one number. That tank-by-tank baseline is why 2,000 damage in two different tanks may contribute differently.
What WN8 measures
The standard formula uses damage, destroyed vehicles, spots, defense points, and wins. Damage has the largest coefficient, but WN8 is not simply average damage with a color attached. Each input is first compared with the expected value of the tanks actually played.
Expected values change as the community dataset is revised. Two sites can therefore disagree if they use different expected-value revisions, omit tanks, or round intermediate values differently. A trustworthy tracker should identify its source and fail visibly when expected values are missing.
What WN8 does not measure
WN8 does not directly reward assisted damage, blocked damage, survival, base experience, map control, or whether a shot removed an important gun. A light-tank player can create a winning vision advantage that WN8 barely recognizes. A late-game damage farmer can also post a respectable number without making equally strong winning decisions.
Career WN8 and period WN8 answer different questions
- Career WN8: performance across the account's full available tank history.
- Period WN8: performance in only the battles between two trustworthy observations.
- Career movement: how much those battles moved the lifetime WN8 number.
These are not interchangeable. Subtracting yesterday's WN8 from today's WN8 produces career movement, not yesterday's session WN8. Averaging per-tank WN8 values is also wrong because tanks with different battle counts must not receive equal weight.
How Tankr protects period WN8
Tankr stores the raw per-tank counters needed at both ends of a tracked period. It subtracts those counters tank by tank, rebuilds the expected totals for only the battles in the window, and applies the community formula once to the combined delta.
WN8 history uses its own observation clock because tank rows and core account totals are fetched at different instants. Its raw tank-row delta must be positive, monotonic, and complete, but it does not need to equal the separately observed core battle delta. Tankr uses the real WN8 endpoints and reports their actual timing instead of discarding valid tank history or pretending both clocks are identical.
How to use WN8 without playing for the metric
- Use a meaningful sample; a handful of battles is noisy.
- Compare recent performance with your own career baseline before comparing with another player.
- Check the tank mix. A new line or unfamiliar class can explain a temporary change.
- Pair the number with survival, win rate, damage ratio, and assistance.
- Choose one controllable behavior for the next session, then review again.
